Variation in Early Urbanism
(Abstract)
Anne P. Underhill
This essay highlights research on variation in early urbanism in different areas of the world and discusses issues that would be worthy of further investigation at city sites in China. The specific issues include debates about identification of urbanism, differences in the structural components of cities, variation in expansion patterns for cities, possible services that cities provide to people living in the hinterlands, and challenges faced by city residents. The goal is to provide useful information to archaeologists and the public in China that will facilitate further publication, especially in English, about the very important early cities in China that have been discovered in diverse regions. Greater understanding of the significant research that is taking place in China is essential for global discussions among archaeologists about variation in urbanization over time.
