The Myths and Memory of Land in Kurdistan
(Abstract)
Rojda Tugrul
There is a complex relationship between war and ecological change in the Kurdistan Region. The war has had a dramatic impact on the ecological and cultural heritage of the Kurdistan Region, and shifts in the socio-political situation can reflect socio-cultural and collective psychological changes. The conflict between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Turkish government has led to ecological destruction and species decline, while at the same time, the war region may become a new home for some species thought to be extinct. Through case studies, such as anecdotal evidence of tigers and leopards, as well as declining flamingo populations, the article demonstrates how war affects the planet’s ability to remember and self-organize. Humans should coexist with the unknown in the midst of war and ecological change, pushing boundaries and finding practical solutions.
