Contain and Conquer: Malaria Control in the Battle of Guadalcanal
(Abstract)
Holger Droessler
The Battle of Guadalcanal was a key battle of World War II in which the Allies gained a strategic advantage through effective malaria control measures. The climatic conditions of the Solomon Islands provided an ideal environment for the spread of malaria, but the Allies were successful in controlling the spread of the disease through quarantine, anti-malarial drugs, and the use of DDT, which reduced non-combat attrition. In addition, Solomon Islanders provided vital support during the war, but also suffered from the disease and war. The success of malaria control is not only reflected in battlefield victories, but also demonstrates the important link between science, the environment and population control.
