The Multi-Faceted Arctic: Past, Present and Future Conceptions of the Region
(Abstract)
Karen Oslund
The complexity and diversity of the Arctic region has different meanings for different groups, including a home for indigenous peoples, a wilderness for explorers, a resource-rich region and a future under climate change. The Arctic also plays an important role in the global economy and politics, especially with its rich oil and gas resources. At the same time, the Arctic faces challenges such as climate change, loss of biodiversity and environmental pollution. Despite this, the future of the Arctic is seen by some as one of “renewal” rather than “extinction.” The paper also identifies areas of potential future conflict in the Arctic, including route development, mineral extraction and environmental pollution, and explores potential governance models. Finally, the article discusses China’s future relationship with the Arctic, including its interests and activities.
