Germany’s Adjustment and Way Forward after Brexit
(Abstract)
Song Lilei and Wang Zhe
In recent years, Brexit and the dramatic changes in the world situation have had far-reaching implications for Germany’s leadership in the EU and the direction of its foreign policy. At the same time, with the rising influence of the “New Europe” countries and the relative weakening of the German-French axis, Germany is facing multiple challenges and needs to find a delicate balance between promoting the EU’s “strategic autonomy” and maintaining the transatlantic relationship. Germany is transforming itself from the traditional economic engine and policy regulator of the EU to a more proactive regional and global leader, and the effectiveness of its policy adjustments will directly determine the future direction of EU unity and development. During Trump’s second term, under the increasing centrifugal trend of the EU towards the US, together with other EU member states, Germany will face major challenges, but it also has an opportunity to strengthen leadership within the EU.
